Filming Locations

  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

    Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Fulham Road was used for the scene in which Bill Harford visits the hospital to search for the body of Mandy, the call girl he had seen reported dead in the newspaper.

  • Elveden Hall

    The Indian-carved interiors of Elveden Hall, near Thetford, provided the opulent interior rooms of the Somerton mansion for the masked orgy sequence.

  • Hackney

    London streets in the Hackney area were among the locations dressed to stand in for New York City street scenes in the film.

  • Hamley's Toy Shop

    Hamleys on Regent Street was used for the film's final scene, in which Bill and Alice reach a fragile reconciliation while Christmas shopping with their daughter.

  • Hatton Garden

    Hatton Garden was dressed with New York-style payphones and 555 telephone numbers to stand in for a Greenwich Village street, used for the sequence in which Bill Harford is stalked after leaving Domino's apartment.

  • Highclere Castle

    Highclere Castle provided additional interior rooms for the Somerton orgy mansion sequence, including the entrance hall, a drawing room, and the library, through which Bill moves during the masked ceremony.

  • Islington

    Streets in Islington were used for the stalking sequence, in which Bill Harford is followed by a sinister man through what is presented as a Greenwich Village neighbourhood.

  • Knebworth House

    Knebworth House was screen-tested as a potential location for the masked orgy mansion but was ultimately rejected in favour of Mentmore Towers.

  • Lanesborough Hotel

    The Lanesborough Hotel served as the Nathansons' apartment for party scenes, and was also originally used to film the billiard-room confrontation between Bill and Ziegler, though Kubrick later re-shot that scene at Pinewood.

  • Luton Hoo

    The interior scenes of Sydney Pollack's townhouse was filmed here.

  • Madame Jo-Jo's

    The interior of Club Sonata, the New York jazz club where Bill meets his old friend Nick Nightingale and obtains the password to the orgy, was Madame JoJo's on Brewer Street in Soho.

  • Mentmore Towers

    Mentmore Towers in Buckinghamshire provided the exterior shots of Somerton, the Long Island mansion where the mysterious masked orgy takes place.

  • Pinewood Studios

    Pinewood Studios was the principal production base for the film, where elaborate sets including four blocks of Greenwich Village street facades were constructed to recreate New York City, allowing Kubrick to shoot the entire film without leaving England.

  • Thetford Forest

    The Thetford area was used in connection with the Elveden Hall filming; Elveden Hall sits on the A11 west of Thetford and its interiors served as the masked orgy mansion scenes.
