Filming Locations

  • Bath

Several scenes set in the fictional city were filmed in Bath. The steps leading down to Parade Gardens were used for the scene where Wonka loses his last coin down a grid before entering the Colonnades - a covered riverside walk - for his first night in town. Bath Abbey, with its Gothic fan vaulting and medieval stained glass, featured in key scenes with vintage cars and artificial snow dressing.

  • Eltham Palace

    Used as Slugworth's office.

  • Leavesden Studios

The town square and most interior/exterior sets were built here, including the chocolate shop and laundry.

  • Lyme Regis

Willy Wonka's arrival in England by ship was filmed at The Cobb, Lyme Regis's iconic 13th-century breakwater harbour. The 1930s steam drifter 'Lydia Eva' was moored in the harbour. Timothée Chalamet was filmed descending the harbour steps.

  • Mapledurham

Flashback scenes showing Wonka as a child with his mother were filmed on stretches of the Thames including Goring Gap, near Sutton Bridge at Sutton Courtenay, and around Mapledurham.

  • Oxford

Two prominent Oxford landmarks feature prominently. The Radcliffe Camera (part of the Bodleian Library complex, dusted with fake snow) serves as the library where Noodle studies. The Hertford Bridge ('Bridge of Sighs') is seen when Abacus Crunch drives the giraffe through the streets. Nearby streets in the Bodleian Library complex also appear.

  • St. Paul's Cathedral

The interior of St Paul's Cathedral was used as the interior of the fictional 'St Benedict's Cathedral', serving as the entrance to the chocolate cartel's underground base.

  • Verulamium Park

    Used as an additional location.
