In a totalitarian future society, Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth rewriting historical records, and begins a forbidden love affair and a tentative rebellion against a regime that controls all thought and language. Michael Radford's adaptation of Orwell's novel, filmed in the very year Orwell envisaged, is a bleak and faithful rendering of the dystopian nightmare.

Filming Locations

  • Alexandra Palace

    The fire-gutted shell of Alexandra Palace was used to represent Victory Square, the public gathering place where the Two Minutes Hate rallies and other Party spectacles take place.

  • London Docklands

    The derelict Beckton Gasworks in the London Docklands was used as the film's primary exterior location, standing in for the bombed-out proletarian zones of Airstrip One and providing the bleak industrial backdrop for outdoor scenes.

  • Shepperton Studios

    Interior sets for the film, including the Ministry of Love interrogation rooms and other enclosed spaces, were built and filmed at Shepperton Studios.
