London Docklands
London Docklands is a former industrial and port area on the north and south banks of the River Thames in east London, covering parts of the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Southwark, and Lewisham. The docks, which closed progressively between the 1960s and 1980s, were the subject of a major regeneration programme beginning in the 1980s led by the London Docklands Development Corporation, resulting in the creation of Canary Wharf, now a major financial and business district. The Docklands Light Railway, opened in 1987, provides rapid transit connections through the area to central London.
