Loch Ness

Loch Ness

1995

An American zoologist travels to the Scottish Highlands to debunk the Loch Ness monster myth for an insurance company, but his scepticism is tested when a local woman and her daughter seem to share a remarkable secret. A gentle family adventure that uses the legend of Nessie as the backdrop for a story about belief and belonging.

Filming Locations

  • Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle was used for scenes where Isabel leads Dr. Dempsey to the castle, and underground passage sequences were filmed inside its historic walls.

  • Loch Ness

Loch Ness itself features in early scenes of the film, including a dawn sequence where Dr. Dempsey first arrives and surveys the loch in search of the creature.

  • Loch Torridon

Loch Torridon, a sea loch on the west coast of the Highlands, was used to double for Loch Ness, providing the scenic loch-side landscape visible in the background of many scenes.

  • Lower Diabaig

The remote village of Lower Diabaig on Loch Torridon was used for the majority of the harbour and village scenes, including the pub confrontation, fishermen sequences, and boat scenes set in the fictional lochside community.

  • Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum in South Kensington was used for the exterior of Dempsey's climactic press conference, where he is unable to go through with revealing his findings and substitutes Isabel's kelpie drawing for his photographs.
