James Bond is dispatched to investigate the murder of a MI6 agent and uncovers a scheme by a rogue former spy to exploit a powerful Soviet weapon satellite, taking him from the Caribbean to the streets of St Petersburg. The film marked Pierce Brosnan's debut as Bond and was a triumphant return for the franchise after a six-year absence.

The Queen's Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse stood in for the St Petersburg airport where Bond is met by CIA contact Jack Wade.

GoldenEye was the inaugural production at the newly created Leavesden Studios, a converted Rolls-Royce aircraft factory; major sets including the St Petersburg street tank-chase sequence and interior scenes were built and filmed here.

The interior of St Sofia's Greek Cathedral on Moscow Road, Bayswater, was used for the St Petersburg church scenes in which Natalya hides out and meets Boris Grishenko.
