Withnail And I

Withnail And I

1986

Two out-of-work actors, the dissolute Withnail and his unnamed friend, escape London for a disastrous holiday in a remote Lake District cottage belonging to Withnail's eccentric and predatory Uncle Monty. Bruce Robinson's cult comedy is a brilliantly observed portrait of late-1960s bohemian decline.

Filming Locations

  • Notting Hill

The Notting Hill area provided the squalid urban backdrop of the film; Withnail and Marwood's derelict flat interior was filmed at 57 Chepstow Place, and the fictional Mother Black Cap pub was the Frog and Firkin at 41 Tavistock Crescent.

  • Sleddale Hall

Sleddale Hall near Shap served as Crow Crag, Uncle Monty's dilapidated Lake District holiday cottage, used for the exterior and downstairs interior scenes of the disastrous rural retreat.

  • Stony Stratford

The exterior shots of the tea room were filmed at The Crown in the Market Square.

  • Tavistock Crescent

41 Tavistock Crescent in Westbourne Park was used as the Mother Black Cap pub, the grimy and intimidating local where Withnail and Marwood drink before their departure for the countryside.
