Two elderly English ladies living a quiet life on the Cornish coast befriend a young Polish violinist who has recently arrived in England, and one of them falls quietly but deeply in love with him. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith lead this graceful and bittersweet film about late-life emotion and unspoken longing.

Filming Locations

    The picturesque Cornish fishing village of Cadgwith served as the primary location for the film's fictional coastal village setting, providing the harbour, cottages and community scenes for this 1930s-set story.

  • Helston

    The nearby market town of Helston provided additional exterior locations for the film, with the production receiving a special credit thanking the people of Helston for their cooperation.

  • Penzance

    The house used for the ladies' home is Cliff Cottage, a holiday let alongside the Cornish coast path, and part of the Porth-en-Alls estate. Cliff Cottage was surrounded by white reflectors to give extra lighting for the cameras. Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Cove were also used for various beach and coastline shots.

    Bessy's Cove was the location for the scenes of the cottage where the ladies lived.
