Portland

Portland

Portland, Dorset, England

Portland is a limestone peninsula or tied island connected to the Dorset mainland by the Chesil Beach barrier bar at Weymouth. The peninsula is approximately 4 miles long and rises to a plateau some 140 metres above sea level at its highest point, with dramatic cliffs on the exposed southern and western sides. Portland is home to Portland Bill lighthouse at its southernmost tip, the Portland Harbour breakwater enclosing one of the largest man-made harbours in the world, and the Isle of Portland is quarried for the high-quality Portland limestone used in St Paul's Cathedral and many other major buildings.
