Luton is a large town and unitary authority in Bedfordshire, England, situated approximately 50 kilometres north of central London in the Lea Valley. The town grew significantly during the 20th century as a centre for the motor vehicle and engineering industries, most notably as the headquarters and main manufacturing base of Vauxhall Motors. Luton Airport, officially named London Luton Airport, is one of the main airports serving the London area and is a major hub for low-cost airlines. The town has a diverse and multicultural population and has experienced significant socioeconomic challenges since the decline of its manufacturing base.
