Grimethorpe

Grimethorpe, Yorkshire, England

Grimethorpe is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It developed primarily as a colliery village following the sinking of Grimethorpe Colliery in 1894, which became one of the most productive coal mines in the Yorkshire coalfield. The colliery closed in 1993 following the miners' strike of the 1980s and its aftermath, resulting in significant economic hardship for the community. Grimethorpe is widely known as the home of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, one of the most celebrated brass bands in the world, which was brought to wider public attention by the 1996 film Brassed Off.
