Grimethorpe Hotel

Grimethorpe Hotel, Grimethorpe, Yorkshire, England

Grimethorpe is a former mining village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, situated approximately five miles south-east of Barnsley town centre. The village became widely known through the 1996 film Brassed Off, which told the story of a colliery brass band facing closure following the shutdown of its pit, and was partly filmed in the village. Grimethorpe Colliery, which had been one of the most productive pits in the Yorkshire coalfield, closed in 1993. The village has faced significant economic challenges since the closure of the colliery, though regeneration programmes have brought investment to the area.
