Great Central Railway

Great Central Railway, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England

The Great Central Railway is a heritage steam railway based at Loughborough in Leicestershire, operating over a section of the former Great Central Main Line between Loughborough and Leicester North. Opened in 1899 as the last main line to be built into London, the original route was one of only a few in Britain to be built to a continental loading gauge. The heritage railway preserves a section of this line and is the only double-track main line heritage railway in the United Kingdom, allowing authentic line-of-route running. The railway operates a programme of steam and diesel passenger services and special events throughout the year.
