Castle Tioram

Castle Tioram, Loch Moidart, Highlands, Scotland

Castle Tioram is a ruined medieval castle situated on a tidal island in Loch Moidart on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, in the Lochaber area. The castle was the seat of the MacDonalds of Clanranald and dates from the thirteenth or fourteenth century, commanding the tidal crossing at the mouth of the Moidart river. It was burned by its own chief in 1715 to prevent its use by Hanoverian forces during the Jacobite rising, and has stood as a picturesque ruin ever since. The castle is accessible on foot across the causeway at low tide and is considered one of the most romantically situated ruins in Scotland.
