Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle, Bamburgh, Northumberland, England

Bamburgh Castle is a large historic castle situated on a rocky basalt outcrop on the Northumberland coast at the village of Bamburgh. The site has been fortified since at least the sixth century AD, when it served as the seat of the ancient Kingdom of Bernicia. The current castle is largely the result of extensive restoration carried out in the late nineteenth century by Lord Armstrong, the industrialist and engineer, though it retains significant medieval fabric. It is a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, and is considered one of the most impressive coastal fortifications in England.
