Fermanagh, Northern Ireland

County Fermanagh is an inland county in the south-west of Northern Ireland, dominated by the Erne Lakelands, a vast system of interconnected lakes, rivers, and waterways centred on Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The lakes were formed when the River Erne, draining a large catchment to the south, was impounded by a low ridge of limestone hills, creating the characteristic archipelago of drumlins islands that characterise the lough system. The county is noted for its abundance of early Christian monuments, particularly the carved stone figures on Boa Island and White Island in Lough Erne. Enniskillen, the county town, occupies a distinctive island position between the two loughs and contains an imposing castle that houses two military museums.
