Dartford Tunnel
The Dartford Tunnel consists of two road tunnels running beneath the River Thames, linking Dartford in Kent to Thurrock in Essex as part of the M25 motorway crossing. The first tunnel was opened in 1963 and a second was added in 1980 to handle growing traffic volumes. Together they form a major artery between the north and south of England, handling tens of thousands of vehicles each day alongside the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge which carries southbound traffic.
