Lothians
The Lothians is a region of central Scotland encompassing the area to the south and east of the Firth of Forth, historically divided into East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian. The region encircles Edinburgh on three sides and provides much of the capital's agricultural hinterland as well as its principal commuter settlements. East Lothian is particularly known for its fertile barley fields, long sandy beaches, and outstanding golf courses, including Muirfield and North Berwick. The region has a strong industrial heritage in coal mining, shale oil extraction, and brewing, alongside its role as the gateway to Edinburgh through the historic town of Haddington and the university town of Musselburgh.
