Gwent
Gwent is a historic region and former county of south-east Wales, broadly corresponding to the modern unitary authority of Monmouthshire and the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, and Torfaen. The region takes its name from the ancient Welsh kingdom of Gwent and encompasses a dramatic landscape ranging from the coalfield valleys in the north to the broad, fertile plain of the Usk estuary around Newport in the south. The Brecon Beacons National Park touches the northern edge of the former county, while the Wye Valley, with its ruined Tintern Abbey, forms its eastern border with England. Newport, the largest city in the area, is a major industrial and commercial centre on the Severn Estuary.
