Middlesex, England

Middlesex is a historic county of England that has not existed as an administrative unit since 1965, when most of its territory was absorbed into Greater London. It occupied the area north of the Thames between the City of London and the Colne Valley, roughly corresponding to the modern London boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, and others. The county takes its name from the Middle Saxons who settled the region, and its principal historical settlement was the City of Westminster. Though administratively defunct, the name Middlesex survives in postal addresses, cricket, and other institutions.
