Merseyside
Merseyside is a metropolitan county in North West England, centred on the Mersey Estuary and the cities of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Liverpool, the county's dominant city, grew to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries as one of Britain's greatest ports, through which vast quantities of goods and millions of emigrants passed. The city's waterfront, including the Royal Liver Building and the Albert Dock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the city's maritime heritage. Merseyside is also internationally renowned as the birthplace of The Beatles and for the fierce footballing rivalry between Everton and Liverpool Football Club.
