Dartmouth
Dartmouth is a historic port town in the South Hams district of Devon, situated on the steep western bank of the River Dart estuary approximately 8 miles from the sea. The town has a long naval history and is home to the Britannia Royal Naval College, the Royal Navy's officer training establishment, which stands on the hillside above the town in a prominent Baroque building opened in 1905. The medieval town centre contains fine examples of Tudor buildings including the Butterwalk, a row of merchant's houses dating from the 1630s supported by carved granite columns. Dartmouth Castle, guarding the mouth of the estuary, is one of the earliest English castles built specifically to use artillery.
