Becton Gas Works

Becton Gas Works, London, England

Beckton Gas Works was a large industrial site in the East End of London, on the north bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Newham. Originally opened in 1870 as the largest gas works in the world, it occupied hundreds of acres and dominated the local landscape for over a century. The site was decommissioned and largely demolished from the 1970s onwards, though it has been used as a film location for its post-industrial character, most notably as a stand-in for Vietnam in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. Much of the land has since been redeveloped.
