Shelley Memorial

Shelley Memorial

Shelley Memorial, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England

The Shelley Memorial is a marble monument to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, housed in a domed alcove within University College, Oxford, where Shelley briefly studied before being expelled in 1811. The sculpture, created by Edward Onslow Ford and unveiled in 1893, depicts Shelley's drowned body lying on a rock, attended by a muse. It was originally intended for the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, where Shelley is buried, but was offered to University College instead. The memorial is located in a purpose-built wing of the college accessible via the main quadrangle.
