Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace located on the River Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, in the town of East Molesey, Surrey. Originally built in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, it was later acquired by King Henry VIII and became one of his most favoured residences. The palace is surrounded by extensive formal gardens, including a famous maze, and the Great Fountain Garden with its ornate parterres. It is managed by Historic Royal Palaces and is open to the public as a major heritage attraction.
