Blackness Castle

Blackness Castle

Blackness Castle, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland

Blackness Castle is a fifteenth-century fortress situated on a promontory projecting into the Firth of Forth, near the village of Blackness in the Falkirk council area of central Scotland. The castle has the unusual shape of a ship when viewed from above, with its towers forming bow and stern, which has given rise to the nickname 'the ship that never sailed.' It served variously as a state prison, a garrison fort, and an ammunition depot over the centuries, and is one of the most important medieval castles in Scotland. The castle is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public.
