Whitby
Whitby is a historic fishing town and tourist resort on the North Yorkshire coast, situated at the mouth of the River Esk where it meets the North Sea, approximately 20 miles north of Scarborough. The town is dominated by the picturesque ruins of Whitby Abbey on the clifftop above the old town, a 13th-century Gothic church that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, published in 1897, and the 199 steps leading up to the abbey are a famous local landmark. Whitby is also renowned for its jet jewellery, its kipper smoking tradition, and the harbour area which retains the character of a working fishing port.
