Westmeath, Republic of Ireland

Westmeath is an inland county in the midlands of Ireland in the province of Leinster, notable for its large number of lakes including Lough Ree on its western boundary and Lough Derravaragh in the interior. The landscape is mostly low-lying with fertile pasture and bogland. Mullingar is the county town and largest settlement, situated on the Royal Canal. The county is generally regarded as part of the Irish Midlands plain.
