The Lake District is a national park in Cumbria, northwest England, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, covering 912 square miles of mountainous terrain, lakes, and fells. The park contains England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike at 978 metres, and its largest and deepest natural lakes including Windermere, Ullswater, and Wastwater. The Lake District has a strong literary and cultural heritage, associated with the Romantic poets including William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and with Beatrix Potter, and attracts around 19 million visitors annually.
