The Embankment
The Victoria Embankment is a road, pedestrian walkway, and public park running along the north bank of the River Thames in central London, between Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. It was constructed between 1865 and 1870 as part of a major civil engineering project designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette to house a new sewage system, an underground railway, and to reclaim land from the tidal Thames. The embankment is lined with gardens, monuments, and historic vessels, including HMS Belfast, which is moored nearby. It provides one of the most celebrated views of the Thames and is a major route for both vehicles and pedestrians in central London.
