The Barras Market

The Barras Market, Glasgow, Scotland

The Barras is Glasgow's famous weekend market, located in the Calton district of the East End at the junction of Gallowgate and London Road. Established in the 1920s by Maggie McIver, the market takes its name from the barrows (street stalls) used by early traders and has grown into a large covered market complex with hundreds of stalls. The market has long been associated with a wide range of goods, from second-hand items and antiques to clothing and household goods, and is considered an important part of Glasgow's working-class cultural heritage. The Barras has in recent years also become home to a growing street food and music scene, attracting younger visitors.
