Stockport

Stockport, Cheshire, England

Stockport is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, situated at the confluence of the rivers Mersey and Goyt approximately 7 miles southeast of Manchester city centre. The town is dominated by its Victorian railway viaduct, a massive red-brick structure with 27 arches carrying the Manchester to London main line through the town centre, and by the sandstone cliffs beneath the town centre in which are carved a network of underground air raid shelters, now open to the public as a museum. Stockport has a strong industrial heritage, particularly in hat manufacturing and textile production.
