St Cuthbert’s Cave
St Cuthbert's Cave is a natural sandstone outcrop and shallow cave near Holburn in Northumberland, traditionally associated with the resting place of the body of St Cuthbert during its long journey from Lindisfarne. According to tradition, monks carrying the saint's remains sheltered at this site during their wanderings across northern England following the Viking raids on Lindisfarne in 875 AD, before eventually settling in Durham. The cave is a striking natural feature in the landscape of the Kyloe Hills, formed from outcropping sandstone that creates a sheltered overhang. It is now a popular destination for walkers on the St Cuthbert's Way long-distance footpath.
