Southend-on-Sea is a large coastal town and unitary authority on the Thames Estuary in Essex, approximately forty miles east of central London. The town has one of Britain's most popular seaside fronts with the world's longest pleasure pier, which extends 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, first opened in 1830 and rebuilt in its current iron form in 1889. The seafront has numerous amusements, restaurants, and the famous Rossi ice cream parlour, and the town is a traditional day-trip destination for Londoners. Southend achieved city status in 2022 and is accessible from London by c2c and Greater Anglia rail services.
