Shirebrook

Shirebrook

Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England

Shirebrook is a former mining town in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, England, situated near the border with Nottinghamshire. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century following the sinking of Shirebrook Colliery in 1896, which dominated the local economy until its closure in 1993. Like many former mining communities in the East Midlands, the town has faced significant economic challenges since the closure of the pit. The surrounding area forms part of the former Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire coalfield.
