Nottinghamshire, England

Nottinghamshire is an inland county in the East Midlands of England, best known internationally through the legend of Robin Hood and the forests of Sherwood, which once covered a substantial portion of the county. The landscape includes the remnants of Sherwood Forest, the Trent Valley lowlands, and the coal mining villages of the west. Nottingham, the county town and a major regional city, has a rich history reflected in its medieval castle and the network of caves carved into the sandstone beneath the city. The county also has strong literary associations, being the birthplace of D.H. Lawrence in the mining town of Eastwood.
