Maiden Castle
Maiden Castle is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe, located approximately two miles south-west of Dorchester in Dorset. The fort covers an area of approximately 47 acres and is surrounded by a series of massive earthwork ramparts and ditches that were developed and elaborated over several centuries from around 600 BC. The site was occupied from the Neolithic period and was captured by the Roman Second Legion under Vespasian around AD 43. It is managed by English Heritage and is one of the most visited ancient monuments in southern England.
