Liverpool Docks
The Liverpool Docks, also known as the Port of Liverpool, line the eastern bank of the River Mersey and formed one of the most important commercial port complexes in the world during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Albert Dock, built in 1846 to designs by Jesse Hartley, is the most celebrated surviving dock complex, featuring cast iron and brick warehouses enclosing a dock basin, and is now a major tourist and cultural destination housing museums, galleries, and restaurants. The waterfront, including the Pier Head with its famous Three Graces buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site forming part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City designation.
