Leicester Square is a pedestrianised public square in the West End of London, in the City of Westminster. It was laid out in the 17th century on land associated with Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, and has been a centre of London's entertainment district for centuries. Today the square is best known as the location of several major cinemas and as a venue for film premieres, as well as for its restaurants and nightlife. The square features a central garden with a statue of William Shakespeare at its centre.
