Kielder Forest

Kielder Forest

Kielder Forest, Northumberland, England

Kielder Forest is the largest working forest in England, covering approximately 250 square miles in the North Tyne Valley of Northumberland. The forest is predominantly planted with Sitka spruce and other conifers, managed for commercial timber production since the 1920s by the Forestry Commission. It surrounds Kielder Water, the largest man-made lake in northern Europe by volume, which was created in the 1980s to supply water to north-east England. The forest and reservoir together form Kielder Water and Forest Park, which is designated an International Dark Sky Park, one of Europe's largest and darkest areas.
