Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire is an inland county in the East of England, immediately to the north of Greater London and forming part of the Metropolitan Green Belt. The county is predominantly suburban and commuter in character, with the chalk ridge of the Chiltern Hills extending into its north-western corner. The River Lea and its tributaries drain much of the county southward towards the Thames. St Albans, built on the site of the Roman city of Verulamium, is the county's most historic settlement, while Hertford serves as the county town.
