Gateshead

Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England

Gateshead is a large town in Tyne and Wear, northeast England, situated on the south bank of the River Tyne directly across from Newcastle upon Tyne, to which it is connected by several bridges including the iconic Tyne Bridge and the Millennium Bridge. The town has undergone extensive regeneration since the decline of its heavy industrial base, most notably in the Quayside area which now hosts the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Sage Gateshead music venue. Gateshead is also home to the Angel of the North, Antony Gormley's monumental sculpture that has become one of the most recognised public artworks in Britain.
