Dyfed
Dyfed was a county in south-west Wales, created in 1974 and abolished in 1996, when it was divided into the unitary authorities of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and Carmarthenshire. The county encompassed a huge and scenically diverse area, from the cliffs and sandy beaches of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the only wholly coastal national park in the UK, to the upland bogs and valleys of the Cambrian Mountains. The region is deeply embedded in Welsh cultural and literary tradition, with strong associations with the medieval tales of the Mabinogion. Carmarthen, one of the oldest recorded towns in Wales, served as the county town.
