Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky headland rising 50 metres above the North Sea, located approximately 3 kilometres south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The castle is accessible only by a steep path and was historically one of the most impregnable strongholds in Scotland due to its naturally defended position. It was used to safeguard the Scottish Crown Jewels from Cromwellian forces in 1651–52. The ruins include a tower house, great hall, chapel, and a range of later buildings spread across the clifftop promontory.
