Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge is a limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills of Somerset and the largest gorge in the United Kingdom. The gorge is approximately 3 miles long with cliffs rising to 137 metres, formed during the last ice age by meltwater erosion of the limestone. It contains several show caves featuring spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, and has yielded important archaeological finds including Cheddar Man, the oldest complete human skeleton found in Britain. The gorge is also the origin of Cheddar cheese, traditionally produced in the caves for centuries to take advantage of their constant cool temperature.
