Burghley House

Burghley House

Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England

Burghley House is one of the greatest Elizabethan country houses in England, situated just outside the town of Stamford in Lincolnshire. It was built between 1555 and 1587 for William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who served as chief minister to Queen Elizabeth I, and has remained the home of his descendants ever since. The house is noted for its extraordinary roofline of towers, turrets, and ornate chimneystacks, and its state rooms contain an outstanding collection of Old Master paintings, tapestries, and decorative arts. The grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown and host the annual Burghley Horse Trials, one of the world's premier three-day eventing competitions.
