Sherborne

Sherborne, Dorset, England

Sherborne is a market town in Dorset, England, situated in the valley of the River Yeo approximately six miles east of Yeovil. The town is known for its outstanding concentration of historic buildings, including Sherborne Abbey, the 15th-century almshouses, and two castles: the ruined Old Castle of the medieval period and the Elizabethan New Castle built for Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594. The town is also home to Sherborne School, one of England's leading independent schools founded in 1550. The town centre is largely built in the warm-toned Ham Hill stone characteristic of the Somerset and Dorset border.
