Highgate is a district straddling the boundary between the London Boroughs of Camden and Haringey in north London, situated on one of the highest points in the capital at approximately 100 metres above sea level. The area is known for Highgate Cemetery, a large Victorian cemetery opened in 1839 that contains the graves of Karl Marx, George Eliot, and many other notable figures. Highgate Village retains a historic character with a green, a row of Georgian and Victorian buildings, and several historic pubs. The area borders Hampstead Heath, one of London's most extensive open spaces.
