Cumbernauld

Cumbernauld

Cumbernauld, Glasgow, Scotland

Cumbernauld is a new town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, located approximately 13 miles northeast of Glasgow. It was designated as a new town in 1955 to relieve overcrowding in Glasgow and was designed around the concept of a high-density town centre on a hilltop ridge, separated from residential neighbourhoods by green space. The town has a population of around 50,000 and is served by road and rail connections, though its brutalist town centre, largely demolished and redeveloped in recent years, was once considered one of the most controversial pieces of urban planning in Britain.
