Argyll

Argyll, Scotland

Argyll is a historic region in the west of Scotland encompassing a deeply indented coastline of sea lochs, peninsulas, and hundreds of islands, making it one of the most geographically complex areas of the British Isles. The region includes the islands of Islay, Jura, Colonsay, and Oronsay, and parts of the coastline look across to Ireland, which lies less than 20 miles away at the closest point. Argyll was the heartland of the ancient kingdom of Dál Riata and retains exceptional early medieval heritage, including the monastery of Iona and the hilltop fortress of Dunadd. The landscape is characterised by rugged mountains, Atlantic oak woodland, fast-flowing rivers, and some of the most scenically dramatic coastline in Scotland.
